In a world where the new-school is overcoming the old-school way of thought and functionality, ArtHouse Lit aims to be the change we seek to see in the world by mentoring one-day publishers and agents from diverse communities, so that they may one day influence the publishing industry in a way that goes beyond the status quo as well.

We are looking for interns who will work closely with the agents and have the opportunity to learn about all facets of author representation. As part of the age-old tradition of publishing, we are currently seeking an unpaid Editorial and Social Media Intern to join the ArtHouse Lit team remotely. This internship is designed for college students and graduates who are interested in getting their foot in the door in the publishing industry in either the editorial or book-agenting fields.

This position provides an opportunity to work in a fast-paced setting, learning and working in all avenues of the publishing business on a wide array of titles each season. Interns are exposed to the publishing process and work remotely (at their own hours) for 10-15 hours per week. Applicants should send a cover letter and resume as their application. Your cover letter should follow the prompt below.

Reading at table

As an ArtHouse Lit intern, you will have the opportunity to participate in each piece of the publishing journey and build real work experience.

You will be encouraged to learn about all aspects of the agency and will have the opportunity to explore areas of your own interest.

EXPERIENCE:
Candidates should have some editorial experience and must have a demonstrated interest in and knowledge of general reading and literature. Candidates should also be self-motivated, skilled critical readers, organized, responsible, detail-oriented and ready to "come as you are," being confident in bringing your own unique perspective to the table. Candidates should also be familiar with Instagram and Twitter, as they will also be in charge of our social media sites. Bookstagrammers and BookTubers welcome, but it’s not mandatory that the perfect candidate is a participant in those communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reading and evaluating queries and manuscripts, learning to master editorial skills, researching agencies for co-agenting opportunities, and other miscellaneous communication and research duties.

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP:
3 Months (can be extended based on mutual agreement)

TO APPLY:
Please send resume, cover letter, and writing sample (reader report, book review, any type of editorial work) to felice@arthouselit.com.

Write to this prompt for your cover letter:
Tell us about a book trend you’re interested in working with and your dream in publishing, if any exists. What do you hope to learn from this internship, and how does your love of all things bookish play into this? This is NOT your typical cover letter, because we are not your typical agency. Let your personality shine through creatively, and don't be shy! The sky is the limit; show us who you are!

COMPLIANCE:
This internship complies with CA State guidelines regarding unpaid internships.

We are happy to work with your college to offer credit for this assignment, but we have no previously arranged agreements in place.

We attest that this unpaid internship:

  • is similar to that which would be given in an educational environment, even though it includes actual operation of the employer's facilities;

  • is for the benefit of the intern;

  • does not displace regular employees, but the intern works under close supervision of existing staff;

  • provides the employer with no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern, and on occasion its operation may actually be impeded;

  • does not entitle the intern to a job at the conclusion of the training period;

  • is based on a mutual understanding between the employer and the intern that the trainee is not entitled to wages for the time spent in training

Meet Ezra

Ezra Karmanos is an English and music student at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. He spent most of his childhood reading fantasy and science fiction. As he began to read more throughout his life, he found that the protagonists he read about weren’t at all like him. Thus they developed an interest in more obscure, independent projects and publishers willing to delve into less commonly heard voices within horror, fantasy, and science fiction. They joined Arthouse Literary Agency’s summer internship in hopes of helping authors in their pursuits and learning more about publishing as a whole.

Meet Hailey

Hailey Stephens is a Writing and Publishing Graduate student at DePaul University, in Chicago, Illinois. She has always loved literature, and she spent her younger years dreaming of an adult life that would allow her to read and write as much as she wanted. Now, her time is spent chasing that dream, and she is especially interested in uplifting artists from rural communities that may be overlooked by such a metropolis-based industry. While Hailey's reading tastes include almost everything (she currently favors romance, fantasy, and thrillers), her writing is focused on both creative nonfiction and psychological and supernatural horror. She's overjoyed to be joining the ArtHouse team as an editorial and social media intern, and she can't wait to learn from everyone she meets while there!

Meet Cherokee

Cherokee Collier is a New England native currently receiving an MA in Writing & Publishing at DePaul University in Chicago. Since the age of four, Cherokee has found nothing better than getting lost in the pages of a great story, using great works of Horror, Memoir, Literary Fiction, and Indigenous Literature to channel in her own writing. She is excited to be able to join this industry at a time where inclusion and stories are expanding in ways she never saw as a kid. She has been waiting for an internship like ArtHouse to develop more dialogue and skills to create a career post graduation. Her top reads of 2023 were My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russel and Bones And All By Camille DeAngelis.

Meet Olivia

Olivia Charlson recently finished the Columbia Publishing Course and is excited to help create inspiring books. She graduated summa cum laude from Northern Arizona University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. After going from a fast-paced newsroom as the features editor for her college's newspaper to creating a literary magazine, she defines herself as a jack-of-all-trades. Her love of theatre has driven her to write several produced plays and she loves comedy even though her writing is more experimental. Olivia loves stories with disjointed characters, endearing narratives, sapphic happy endings, sardonic peculiarities, and feminine rage.
